News: We’re Headed To Seattle To Present At The University Of Washington!

Strangely, this trip to Seattle feels a bit like a quinceanera or cotillion.

On the most basic level, I’ve never been to Seattle or even the Pacific Northwest. Amazing, right? What in the world have I been doing with my time? But I’m also incredibly excited to be presenting to and in the midst of a colorful group of community designers from all over the world, who work in some of the toughest and most challenging situations. The conference focuses on:

‘In cities around the world, immigration and movement of people and ideas have continued to shape the local demographics, urban experiences, and city form. Building on, yet going beyond the notion of multiculturalism, how can cities and urban places facilitate cross-cultural transactions and understanding? How can cross-cultural understanding be constructed, “staged,” or engendered through social and spatial practices in the contemporary urban environment? How can a better understanding of the transcultural processes inform the transformation of the contemporary city?’

I am excited to be presenting Shadelab and other projects that I’ve done over the years, demonstrating the critical role that youth can play as community design leaders and cultural translators in the design of complicated multicultural public spaces, and neighborhoods.
